SILVICULTURE - Cultivation of forest trees / forestry

Seeking workers experienced in the tending of a forest, or the growing of trees to work in Canada

Location - New Brunswick, Canada

Seasonal Position - June 2019

Years of Experience - Minimum two years

Salary - $20 Per Hour

Hours - Flexible – 7AM – 4:30PM   /  Monday – Friday (Saturday work possible)


RESPONSIBIITY
Involved in all aspects of forestry, including:
·  Nurseries and seed production
·  Tree planting and stand tending
·  Planning, modelling, growth and yield monitoring
·  Road construction and maintenance
·  Harvesting and transportation
·  Wood procurement and sales
·  Fish, wildlife, recreational and environmental management
·  Forest fire and other forest protection activities
·  Research, development and continuous improvement

 
Conditions:
·  Outdoors all day through rain or shine
·  Temperatures can vary from 0 to 30 degrees
·  Insects (mosquitoes, bees, wasps) and wildlife around the site
·  Manual labor working 8-10 hours a day (morning till afternoon) for a 20-22 week season starting May 1
·  Option to work 5-6 days a week

·  Planting:
  • Potentially rocky ground with logging debris left
  • Sites are scarified with either trenches or chaining to expose planting dirt
  • Carrying 15-40 pounds of trees on harness and using tool to plant trees
  • Establish successful plantations planted at 1800 seedlings per hectare

·  Thinning:
  • Thick growth areas (10,000-50,000 stems per ha) with trees 6-8 feet tall
  • Potentially rocky ground with logging debris left
  • Using professional thinning saw with required PPE to select crop trees and remove all competition
 
·  Requirements - Required gear that workers must bring:
  • Steel toe boots
  • Work pants and shirts

·  Optional gear:
  • Bug nets
  • Rain jackets

·  Provided gear:
  • Planting harnesses
  • Planting tool (spade/gun/dibble)
  • Thinning saw
  • Hard hat, ear protection, and eye protection
  • Appropriate first aid kits
