CANADA PROGRAM: Machinist - Conventional

 

General Duties
•    Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints or study sample parts to determine machining operations to be performed, and plan best sequence of operations
•    Compute dimensions and measure and lay out work pieces
•    Select appropriate tooling for job requirements
•    Set up, operate and maintain a variety of conventional machine tools to perform precision, non-repetitive machining operations such as turning, milling, boring, drilling, and other operations
•    Use indicators and other tools to set up fixtures, set tool holders and cutting tools, touch-off tooling and make adjustments to ensure adherence to tight tolerance dimensions
•    Maintain tight tolerances and verify dimensions of components for accuracy and conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, verniers, height gauges
•    Load, deburr and, inspect parts and ensure conformance to quality and drawing requirements.
•    Maintain quality of parts and report deviations from specifications and tolerances to supervisor and QC personnel
•    Complete inspection reports (ITP) and other quality related paper work, as required
•    Fit and assemble machined metal parts and subassemblies using hand and power tools
•    Perform daily preventative maintenance on facility machinery and/or assigned machining center
•    Mentor junior machinists and train them in machining techniques using conventional or CNC machine tools

Job requirements

Education
•    Machinist Trade certificate or diploma (Red Seal or similar) or equivalent experience
•    Proof of enrollment in an accredited Apprentice program

General Competencies
•    Must be able to work with minimal supervision and
•    Must be able to solve problems
•    Must read blueprints and part drawings
•    Must work with both imperial and metric measurement units
•    Must communicate with, and assist co-workers, operators, supervisors, and leadhands as required

Specific Equipment and Machinery Experience
•    Work to close tolerances (up to 0.0005”)
•    Operate a horizontal boring mill or vertical boring mill (lathe).  Prior prior experience on this equipment is essential
•    Set-up and machine large components and weldments (example: 1 to 5 meters in length or diameter).
•    Operate an overhead crane to move large work pieces

•    Available for rotating days/afternoons shift or straight afternoon shifts
•    Attention to detail
•    Standing for extended periods
•    Handling weights up to 23 kg (50 lbs)
•    Steel-toed safety boots
